Pom Pom Glasses Chain

As you might have noticed looking around or surfing the net, the past seems to be back – cropped tees, chokers, a Clinton running for president, Pokémon, a new Harry Potter book…the 90s are here again! And while I’m excited for the Harry Potter and Pokémon part I still have to get used to the sight of teens and twens showing their belly button and looking like 12-year-olds with those chokers. I know I loved the choker back then, but I was, well, 12.

And don’t get me started on the crop top part! Growing up in the 90s was amazing, especially slowly getting to know the new technology while at the same time still being able (and wanting to) go outside and play with your friends. I miss that when seeing the kids of today (okay I sound very old now). Why I am talking about the past? This project reminds me of old ladies wearing thick glasses with a golden chain, although I can guarantee that you will not feel old with this one!

You need:

  • White suede leather cord
  • Yarn in different colours
  • Gold chain
  • Jump rings in two sizes (small and normal)
  • Two eyeglass loops
  • Jewellery pliers
  • Fork
  • Scissors

pom-1 Start by making the pom poms! Take your fork and wrap yarn around the prongs. Thread another piece of yarn through the hole between yarn and fork and tie a knot in the middle of the loop (so you have a sort of bow). Then cut off the ends of the “bow” to make a pom pom. Repeat with different colours so you have about 8 small pom poms in the end.

pom-2 Now the tassels: Wrap the yarn around the prongs of the fork or a piece of cardboard, then thread a piece of yarn through the hole of the loop and close with a knot. Wrap another piece of yarn around the upper part of the tassel and close with a knot, then sever the ends of the tassel. Repeat this until you have about 8 small tassels.

pom-3Prepare the chain by cutting a piece of leather cord in a length of your choice, then knot it to a jump ring and seal the knot with a drop of glue. Cut a piece of gold chain in the same length and attach one end to the same jump ring using one of the smaller jump rings. Attach both to the eyeglass loop and repeat this process with the other end.

pom-4 Start attaching the tassels and pom poms (about 20cm apart from the eyeglass loop) to the gold chain with the smaller jump rings, alternating between pom pom and tassel. Now you just have to connect the chain and your sunglasses and you’re ready to go!

This one is definitely an eye-catcher since you don’t see this kind of glasses chain very often these days. I really like that it’s both useful (since you just can take of your sunglasses and let them hang around your neck) and a piece of jewellery. Hope you are inspired!

I have tutorials for pom pom and for tassels, but I didn’t make tassels with a fork… This is helpful. Also a great idea, what we can decorate with them …
