Heck, possibly everyone from pupils to students to 9-5 workers know that struggle. The alarm goes off too early, you hit snooze a few times and in the end you have 20 minutes left to shower and dress yourself. You skip breakfast, perhaps for good, or you grab an overpriced bagel on your way to work/school/university. And I guess that some people (your parents, magazines) have even told you that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Well, let me tell you something: It definitely is!
Breakfast: The most important meal of the day
It provides the body and brain with fuel after an overnight fast, hence the name. Without breakfast you are effectively running on empty. It restores glucose levels so you can think strait and work better. And it is even shown that those who eat breakfast are less likely to be overweight, because you’re more likely to reach for high sugar and fatty snacks mid-morning. So these are the scientific facts. However I know that life works in unpredictable ways and sometimes you just cannot have that breakfast your body needs. In this case I have a solution for you, combining most of the ingredients you need to start the day. Let me tell you, it’s better than that overpriced bagel!
The recipe
You need:
- ½ a banana
- 1 cup of Greek yoghurt
- 1 tbsp. of whey powder
- 1 ½ tbsp. of oats
- 1 tbsp. of chia seeds
- 1 small cup of coffee
- Honey
- Blender
Brew the coffee as you like it (milk, sugar?) and set it aside to cool. Chop the banana.
Fill the cup of Greek yoghurt, whey powder, banana, oats, chia seeds into your blender. Add the coffee when it’s cooled. If you want to accelerate the process, just add one or two ice cubes. Season with honey.
Blend everything until you like the texture. Maybe add a bit of milk if it’s too thick, or some more oats if it’s too thin. Add honey until you like the degree of sweetness. Enjoy!
Although I am lucky enough to enjoy togetherness and breakfast every morning, this smoothie has really helped me to start the day right. As I usually only eat fruits I always need something to fill my stomach and get me through the first hours. It’s amazing how the smoothie has easily helped me with that! And although it’s not the usual sweetness you enjoy on your tongue when drinking a smoothie, it is super delicious. So keep this recipe in mind whenever you need a quick breakfast on the go! One that’s super cheap, can be prepared the day before and gives you everything you need. Oh, and for your sugar low during the day, consider these!
