Tips | Let’s Grab a Book: My Classics Reading Challenge

Hey guys! Today will be about something completely different from the things I usually write about – books! As most people I enjoy reading, may it be a book, a magazine or the newspaper. Although in my past years I often had to read academic texts and literature, I never stopped enjoying books and reading. And you may know (nah, you probably don’t) that I actually studied a combination of German literature and media studies before, which meant reading a looooot. Okay, I watched loads of (partly really strange) films, but books made up at least three quarters of my studies.

And now? Right now I’m in my final throes of my economics studies, which is a whole different matter. Although I feared that I would somehow lose my fascination for books and arthouse cinema, films like ‘Call me by your Name’ or classic literature are still very appealing to me. Speaking of ‘Call me by your Name’: Go and watch that film and thank me later!

To be in or to be out

What I always experienced with films and especially books, was this: There was always this consensus what was good literature/filmmaking and what you just had to read/watch to take part. May it be the ‘Top Rated Movies’ list on imdb.comor in my case, classic German literature. Believe it or not, I trudged through Goethe’s Faust Part One and Two even before my German literature studies started! So I do confess that I’m an overachiever when it comes to those things.

This brings me to today’s topic. Although I have read a bunch of books since my previous studies, there is still that tiny annoying overachiever in me who wants to know it all. Thus when I discovered a harmless Buzzfeed quiz (a guilty pleasure of mine…) about literature and books you have to have read, well. You know how the story goes.

That damn list

My classic book challenge works as follows: I work through that list and read every single book. And then learn if they’re really as great as everyone says. Maybe I write a review, maybe you have to get your own idea of them! Here’s the list:

I am pretty sure that this list is incomplete, and if you want to add a must-read, please do! While I am convinced that this will take me years, I am really looking forward to this!

You’ve inspired me. Now that I have a little time, I might pursue a challenge similar to this.
